TRP 100: Certificate in International Trade and Development

In line with the overall aim to bring new perspectives to world trade, to inspire the creation of networks in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and to develop competencies for strengthening the capacity of LDCs, trapca is offering a foundational course leading to aCertificate in International Trade and Development (CITD). This course gives an introduction to trade theory, trade law and development. Moreover, participants are required to undergo an intensive practically oriented module on International Negotiation and Cooperation combining theoretical study and moot negotiations. The foundational course enhances some elementary research and presentation skills as participants are required to write and submit a short analytical paper. The CITD serves as a background to the topics covered in the specialised short courses offered by trapca.

Target Group

The target audience of the foundational course Certificate in International Trade and Development consists of those who are, or in the future will be, involved in trade-related activities in their capacity as officials, executives or members of relevant ministries and government agencies, parliamentary institutions, universities, business and civil society organisations in LDCs and other low income Sub-Saharan African countries.

Objectives

The objectives of the foundational course are to promote the kind of knowledge and understanding as well as key competencies for:

• Understanding the basics of the theory of international trade.

• Appreciating the role of international trade in regional and national development.

• Deepening the understanding of the global regulatory framework for international trade,including the current issues of trade regulation that are pertinent to developing countries.

• Understanding the current issues of discussion multilateral trade negotiations, and the stakes, constraints and opportunities for the developing world in those negotiations.

• Understanding the basics of trade data retrieval and analysis.

• Developing basic trade diplomacy and leadership skills.

• Developing quality research and writing skills necessary for preparing trade related briefs or position paper.
